MacBook pro early 2011

Hi Apple Forum, Im new to apple and am having problems with a MacBook pro early 2011 15'' model serial no:C02FDG7NDF8V that was given to me. Im not sure if this is in the right spot but heres my problem, when I first received the laptop it worked fine. I went to disk utilities and wiped the hard drive. I was re download OS but the laptop says it cannot. I left the laptop for a month and it was turning on. I have got a new HD for the laptop and the OS X 10.8.3 on a usb, although I have not installed anything yet.I have tried all the resets and still nothing.

Is there anyone out there will a little more knowledge that could tell me what to do or what needs replacing.
