iPhone 5 wont turn on after failed update

My iphone 5 wouldnt turn on, so i put it into recovery mode and plugged it into itunes. it asked me to update the sotware without losing data or to restore. i hadnt backed up recently so i tried to update. during the update, an error 27 came up and said it couldnt be updated. tried this a few times and still didnt work. now my phone is just saying to plug into itunes everytime i try to power it up. is there any way i can get out of this or retrieve my data the restore, i have load of pictures on there i dont want to lose.
