how to make Smart Strings smart???

I've tried watching videos and searching tutorials about using Smart Strings, yet the only tutorials for smart strings are all for iPad or iPhone but not Mac. I'd like to know how to make the Smart Strings with legato, pizzicato, tremolo, and so on in Garageband 10.0.3 for Mac. The help menu only tells me what Smart Strings can do but not HOW to do it. Please help. Thanks
