What year did Apple stop making the MacBook Pro 15 inch with optical drive?

Right now I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13inch i5 2.5 GHz with 256 SSD & 16 gigs of ram with the optical drive. I want to get a 15inch MacBook Pro with i5 or i7 and still be able to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD & max out the ram myself. I know Apple went to flash ram and SSD's.

So what year should I keep my eyes open for?

My laptop is used for video editing, coding and graphic design & minimal web surfing.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

The Early 2013 also was the start of Retina display and lack of built-in optical drive for 15-inch MB/Pro.

And the 15-inch MacBook Pro (mid-2012) was discontinued in October 2013; while 13-inch wasn't.

Sources of 'refurbished' or repaired/restored previously owned models may include places such as

OWC, and other companies who offer a limited warranty or guaranty. Sometimes companies who do

repairs & get returns from schools or business, in small quantities, may have variable number in stock.

Wegenermedia, PowerMax, powerbookmedic, and probably half a dozen others offer repaired/used.

These can include models no longer seen in the Apple online Special deals refurbished section.

You can see http://everymac.com for other information, and if you don't have it, the download database from

http://mactracker.ca gives you a nice app with occasional updates for free, for a good reference source.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
