Can I copy old iMovie dvds into the latest version of iMovie?

I have hours of dvds that I produced from an old iMac and iMovie (circa 2007) . Now I need to grab parts of all those videos to create new videos in the latest version of iMovie. Has anyone done this successfully?

Imac6, Mac OS X (10.4.9), Canon HV20

Use the free Handbrake app to convert the MPEG-2 format found on the DVD to a QuickTime format and use that with iMovie.
