Q: My (relatively new) iMac is incredibly slow - Please help!

Hi,

I realize this question is likely very repeated, but, I've scoured the forums and haven't found a solution that works, and I'm not sure what to do. My relatively new iMac is incredible slow. Like, super slow. From a restart to a place in the desktop where I can reasonable use the computer, is minutes, maybe 5. I see constant beachballs. Frequently, I might be using a program then switch over to Safari to do a web search and the computer has to catch up to my typing. Not all the time, but it happens at least once a day. Again, it's slooooooow. And, I don't know what to do.

Here is a EtreCheck report. I actually ran 2 within 30 minutes of each other just in case you might be interested in the differences.

Your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions are most welcome!

    relatively new

I've scoured the forums and haven't found a solution that works, and I'm not sure what to do.

Please read the warranty paperwork that came w/your computer.

You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.

You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.

Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.

Let Apple deal w/the problems & your concerns. It's what you paid them to do.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

    Uninstalling

If, for some reason, you need to uninstall HoRNDIS, you can simply drag the extension to the trash. In the Finder, go to the “Go” menu, and select “Go to folder...”; in that, type ”/System/Library/Extensions”. Find “HoRNDIS.kext”, and drag it to the trash. When prompted, type your password. Do the same for the “HoRNDIS.kext” that lives in ”/Library/Extensions”, as well. Then, restart your Mac to be sure it is unloaded.

How come? I have no idea what HoRNDIS is (but I read the link). Could that cause slowness? I will perform the steps asked for by Linc Davis soon. Also, I just did a diagnostic and it found no problems. Disk Utility found no problems with the disk.

Not if "etrecheck" is to be believed, because it says the kernel extension is not loaded and therefore has no effect at all. However, I don't believe "etrecheck" output.

    Removed it.

And there is, of course, no change.

not yet, seems smooth, no beachball, but let's see how this plays out.

    Linc,

You are free to use EtreCheck reports to diagnose problems just like anyone else. However, I strongly advise you to just stick to the facts of what EtreCheck reports or ignore it altogether. It isn't like a bible or a politician for you to believe or disbelieve. It is open source software. If you want to contribute by finding any logic might make its output unreliable, then include a source file citation to back up your claims. If not, then stay away from things that you don't understand. Programming is like brain surgery. It is really hard, and few people can do it. But just because you don't understand it doesn't mean you can disbelieve it.

    Hello mrpeepers,

I think one or more of your online backup/synchronization tools is consuming all of your RAM. Technically, OS X is supposed to use all the RAM it can find. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. However, you haven't been running for very long and all of your RAM is in use. By comparison, I have been running Xcode (a very intensive program) for about six days straight and I still have 5 GB RAM free (out of 16).

EtreCheck is designed to easily identify the most command and serious problems. But sometimes, it is useful just to show that you don't have any of those and you need to do more detailed diagnostics. Run Activity Monitor and look at the Memory tab. What does it say at the bottom?

You can try creating a new user account on your Mac, log out of your current account, and log in to that new account. Does it still run slowly?

Run Console.app and look for a message repeated many thousands of times. There is an awful lot of junk in the console. Don't spend too much time trying to decipher it.

The next time you restart, run EtreCheck again right away, before running other programs. If all of your RAM is in use, then something's wrong.

Ultimately, you are probably going to have to start uninstalling some of those background programs. Even if you don't think they are the cause, you have to start eliminating possibilities. Once you find the culprit, you can reinstall all of the innocent victims. Make sure to use only vendor-provided uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. Never try to delete these files by hand. Never use an app-zapper.

Yes, it still runs very slow on other accounts.

I'll give this a go, next restart.

Side note, I am running Backblaze, Timehop, Dropbox in the background... Could these really be bringing the system to its knees?

    Baby Boomer,

If you don't have anything useful to add to the thread, you're just wasting bandwidth. Telling OP to pose all questions to Apple is inconsistent with the existence of this forum which is here specifically to provide advice to users with legitimate questions, which this one certainly is.
