Q: My (relatively new) iMac is incredibly slow - Please help!

Hi,

I realize this question is likely very repeated, but, I've scoured the forums and haven't found a solution that works, and I'm not sure what to do. My relatively new iMac is incredible slow. Like, super slow. From a restart to a place in the desktop where I can reasonable use the computer, is minutes, maybe 5. I see constant beachballs. Frequently, I might be using a program then switch over to Safari to do a web search and the computer has to catch up to my typing. Not all the time, but it happens at least once a day. Again, it's slooooooow. And, I don't know what to do.

Here is a EtreCheck report. I actually ran 2 within 30 minutes of each other just in case you might be interested in the differences.

Your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions are most welcome!

Side note, I am running Backblaze, Timehop, Dropbox in the background... Could these really be bringing the system to its knees?

    Hello again mrpeepers,

I don't think that is a side note. I think that is the problem. You have 8.4 GB of cache and a mechanical hard disk. If you had a normal amount of cache, like the 1.6 GB that I have, or an SDD, it wouldn't be a problem. But with your RAM completely full like this, anything you want to do is going to be slow. Any program that needs to use RAM will first have to reclaim it from your cache. Now, as far as the operating system is concerned, there is nothing wrong whatsoever. That's why you have the green indicator. In your case, the green doesn't mean good, it means the colour of your grass as you watch it grow while launching apps.

I suggest removing Timehop first as it is the one I haven't heard about before. Then try Backblaze. Finally try Dropbox. Restart and see how well it runs. Your cache value should be much smaller.

Virtual memory is really tricky business. For many years, we learned to maximize our free RAM at all costs, because that was important. It really isn't anymore and I don't want to suggest that you need to keep any particular amount of free RAM available. Your system is optimized to use RAM as efficiently as possible. It is just that running all of those internet sync programs just happens to be something that heavily uses your file cache. And these days, as more and more people get SSDs, fewer and fewer people notice things like that. Of course, with this like of logic, it won't be long before the OS runs so inefficiently that SSDs are just as slow as mechanical hard disks are today. It is inevitable.

    Hello again mrpeepers,

Hopefully removing those background processes will fix it. There is always a possibility that it won't however. Your startup drive could be failing. In some cases, EtreCheck can report that, but not always.

Appreciate the response. Now, when you say remove, should I try to stop them from starting at launch or completely remove them? If removing/uninstalling the program, that's going to suck for Backblaze as that's my cloud backup. Crud.

So, please clarify for me if you want me remove these (uninstall) programs one by one. Then I'll run another report.

    A

Back up all data before proceeding.

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.

    Step 1

If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.

Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:

    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.

    Step 2 (optional)

Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.

Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

              Utilities Terminal

from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:

    resetp

Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:

    resetpassword

Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.

Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.

Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.

    Select

               Restart

    from the menu bar.

    B

    Back up all data again.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ~/Library/Caches/CloudKit

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. Log out or restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Ummm, I learnt that 1 3.2 GHZ is slow for an iMac. This iMac particularly faces wrath of Apple experts for being low at spec. At times, Boot Camp also makes the system slow (with that spec it is likely). And not to forget you are on Yosemite.

I've been having the exact same problem on my iMac, making it all but unusable. The problem started out of the blue, and Disk Utility isn't reporting any problems with the drive. However, I just received the following email from Apple:

    Dear iMac owner,
Apple has determined that certain 3TB hard drives used in 27-inch iMac systems may fail. These systems were sold between December 2012 and September 2013.
Our records show that you have an iMac with an affected 3TB hard drive. Apple will replace
your hard drive with a new one, free of charge.
Please visit the iMac (27-inch) 3TB Hard Drive Replacement Program page to learn more about the replacement process.
    We apologize for any inconvenience.

If my drive is failing, that would explain everything. Perhaps yours is failing too?

Linc, before I do what you're asking, could you please tell me what are the ramifications? I don't have any custom permissions, so, what exactly will this (This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default.) do?

    Hello again mrpeepers,

i suggest removing them because that is the easiest solution. You should be able to disable them too, but there might be some specific procedure for each one. There are some launchd commands that might work. But that is why we on Apple Support Communitis don't like to provide help with 3rd party software. Apple is pretty consistent about how software works. There is no guarantee about 3rd party software. The standard terminal commands might work, and might not. The safest bet is to just uninstall 3rd party software until the problem is identified. In many cases, just uninstalling and then reinstalling the latest version will fix the problem. But in all cases, the most important step is to find the problem first.

No. That's the problem. You can only remove these files by using vendor-provided uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. You cannot drag them to the trash. That may make whatever problem you have much worse. You can use the "Click for support" links in your EtreCheck report to get a head start on tracking down the official uninstallers.

And again, this is really just a diagnostic effort. Once you determine exactly what is causing the problem, you may be able to ask that company for support. Hopefully, they will have seen this problem before and can tell you how to correct it. They don't want you to uninstall their software so they are going to have incentive to fix the problem.

This is a pretty standard procedure when tracking down problems in a complex operating system like OS X. If there aren't any obvious problems, you have to start looking for places and people who might recognize the symptoms and can definitively identify and correct the problem. Asking in Apple Support Communities and running EtreCheck are important first steps in figuring out where to go from here.
