Jun 29, 2015 9:26 AM in response to kdjensen8888by léonie,What are your iCloud Settings on your iPhone and your Mac? Is your iPhone using iCloud Photo Library? And your Mac as well?
Is My Photo Stream enabled on both devices?

Jun 29, 2015 9:30 AM in response to léonieby kdjensen8888,Im not using iCloud (I don't want to have to pay for it). I have photo stream enabled on both. My phone pictures show on my computer via photostream, but I need to have them permanently saved on the computer. That way, I can empty out my photo stream and still have the pictures on my computer.

Jun 29, 2015 9:42 AM in response to kdjensen8888by léonie,My Photo Stream in Photos for Mac is importing to the library automatically. You cannot prevent the My Photo Stream photos from importing. When you delete from My Photo Stream on your iPhone the photos will be removed from the My Photo Stream album on the Mac, but they should still be visible in the Moments ad the All Photos album..
That importing by USB does not show the photos as new confirms, that they are already in the library and not only in My Photo Stream.
Have you checked the "All Photos" album, if the My Photo Stream photos have really been deleted from the Photos library and not only been removed from the Photo Stream?

So the import is only automatic, if you have iCloud Photo Library enabled. The text of the Preferences setting is a bit misleading.
The Photos help does not say how to import and I cannot test it, because I am using iCloud Photo Library, and the the My Photo Stream album is not shown.
Try to ctrl-click one of the photos in My Photo Stream. Is there an "Import" option, like for the Shared Photo Streams?

Jun 29, 2015 6:21 PM in response to léonieby kdjensen8888,I have the My Photo Stream box checked, and it does not give me the option to import. I haven't tried deleting from my phone yet, because I do not see a way to delete it from my photostream but keep it on my phone as was allowed in previous versions. Do you suggest completely deleting it off of my phone to remove it from my photostream, and seeing if that effects my mac photos?

I would test that with one photo. You can export the photo from Photos on your Mac with "File > Export" to keep a backup, before you delete it on your iPhone.
When I tested that some time ago, deleting a photo from the photo stream on the iPhone with iOS 8 deleted it from the iPad as well, but not from the Mac in iPhoto or Aperture, but I cannot test this in Photos on Mac.

Jun 29, 2015 11:22 PM in response to ismc20by léonie,My Photo Stream FAQ - Apple Support
This document is unfortunately out of date. Most text is written like it used to be on iOS7.The document does not describe what will happen, when you delete photos from the My Photo Stream Album on iOS8 devices and in the Photos for Mac app.
- And it does not describe how to import from My Photo stream in Photos for Mac.
- And it does not describe, if it is possible at all to delete from the My Photo Stream album selectively on any device without deleting from the library at the same time.
