In order to be able to use a number on your iPad to send messages, you need to have an iPhone. Make sure you're signed into iMessages on your iPhone. Then, sign into iMessages on your iPad. You should then have the option of using the phone number from your iPhone to send and receive messages.
The SIM (ICCID) number is not relevant to anything except activating a device.
iPads receive iMessages which are sent to an email address. iPads do not natively send or receive standard text messages (SMS messages) or photo text messages (MMS messages).
Your iPad has a phone number but that is used only for cellular data and not text messages or phone calls.
This helped me out immesley (Cant spell sorry!!!). I had been wrecking my brain wondering why my number that was given to my simcard thats in my ipad wasnt working. Well it wouldn't would it!! I have done what was mentioned above tho and i have imessage on my iphone, so i can now send text via my mobile number from my ipad. I guess it was all a little to technical for me, and I was running round in circles. Thank god for the apple forum. Your a star, thank you.
