Replaced HDD with SSD and now Yosemite freezes

Hello:

My 2008 iMac HDD has died and before it died I wanted to upgrade the HDD to a SSD because it ran so slow. I manage to to the upgrade successfully. However now I am noticing random machine freezes. Meaning the mouse can move around the desktop but there is not response to a mouse click or event he "force quite" dialog is not responsive. The only think I can do is a hard reboot (power off and back on). Does anyone know why these freezes could be occurring? Is it related to something called "Trim"?

Nothing to do with TRIM. Can you tell us exactly how you installed Yosemite on your SSD? That may help us figure our where the problem is and how to solve it.

rk....

I created USB boot drive with the install files on it. I used this same USB boot drive and created an external USDB HDD (system OSX) and ran from this for a while until I got the SSD... and never had a freeze from the OS running on the external USB HDD.

Okay, what I'd recommend doing at this point is going to the Mac App Store and click the Purchased tab, then install Yosemite from there. This will give you the most up-to-date version and also ensure the recovery partition has been installed. Then test it and see if the system stabilizes.

Just to be clear... you mean run the install from the app store, over top the existing install?. Will my files and user directory be OK, meaning preserved? I guess its also OK if not becuase I've made a backup.

Yes that is exactly what I mean, all your files, apps and setting will be left in-tact. However, it is ALWAYS wise to ensure you have at the very least a Time Machine backup of your entire system prior to doing any updates on your system. You mention you have a backup however you didn't state what type of backup it is.

I have a backup in the form of a Carbon Copy Cloner backup. I made a bootable copy of the whole drive. FYI.

Got it. BTW what I would have recommended is prior to installing the SSD backup using CCC to your external HD. Then install the SSD, boot from the CCC EHD and then copy from CCC to the SSD and you're done. That would have been much more efficient that using the method you did.

Thanks... I had no backup however. Both my internal HDD died and my time machine drive got corrupted. 😟

I understand, what I recommend in almost all circumstances is to have redundant backups on separate EHDs for just that reason. EHDs and backups fail! In addition to using TM, I also create a bootable clone on a totally separate EHD. I have this setup for all three Macs in our house.

Wanted to update you. I did an install from the app store of Yosemite. After the install loaded up a virtual box session that I had and the OS froze again, had to do a hard reboot. Sorry, I seem to still be having an issue.

Your computer is low on RAM, it should be upgraded to the maximum amount for a 2008 machine which is 6GB. Purchase the upgrade directly from OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial. You will have 1 2GB DIMM in one slot and the other will have a 4GB DIMM. ONLY purchase from these vendors!
