Trying to download Yosemite and get the following message: "You need 5.25 GB of available space to download OS X 10.10. Remove items from your startup disk to increase available space."
I have an Airport TC connected to the mac. Can i use some sort of partition to remove items from the start up?

Not on a Time Capsule. If you need an item currently located in your home folder, put it on a regular external drive and back that up to the Time Capsule; if you don’t, just delete it.

Niel: Ok, sorry for my iStupidity but. I really don't understand. My Time Capsule is my external HD. I get real nervous removing items! You also reference a "home folder." What is this? I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill but want to be safe vs. sorry. Thanks for your help!
You're not safe currently, OS X needs a minimum of 10GB free for safe operation, you are already beyond that. Your HDD is far too full, that's Job 1. Get another external drive and move at least 20GB to it, don't put it on the TC drive.
1. Your home folder is the item named Home in the Finder’s Go menu.
2. All drives will eventually fail; any data you’d like to keep should be on at least two.
