Hello, my iMac gets very hot and slow

Hello, my iMac gets very hot, slow and the coloured wheel is constantly turning, especially when Mail App open. Have this problem since about 1 week. Still have 342GB of 500 GB free HD. Have 4GB Memory.

Writing this text I had 4 times this coloured wheel, pausing mid-writing.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

The most obvious thing is your internal HD is reporting 609 errors. This means it may be failing! You are using Time Machine, that is good. Verify that TM is working and backing up. After you have done that then boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup) open Disk Utility and run Verify Disk on the internal HD and Repair HD. If the HD cannot be 100% repaired after the 2-3rd pass of running Repair Disk take the machine to your local Apple Store or AASP to have the HD replaced.

Hello again.

I did as mentioned above. During recover setup the iMac had normal temperature and Disk Repair/Verify resulted in:

Verifying and repairing partition map for “ST3500418AS Media”Checking prerequisitesChecking the partition listAdjusting partition map to fit whole disk as requiredChecking for an EFI system partitionChecking the EFI system partition’s sizeChecking the EFI system partition’s file systemChecking the EFI system partition’s folder contentChecking all HFS data partition loader spacesChecking booter partitionsChecking booter partition disk0s3Repairing file system.Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.Checking extents overflow file.Checking catalog file.Checking multi-linked files.Checking catalog hierarchy.Checking extended attributes file.Checking volume bitmap.Checking volume information. The volume Recovery HD appears to be OK.File system check exit code is 0.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Reviewing boot support loadersChecking Core Storage Physical Volume partitionsUpdating Windows boot.ini files as requiredThe partition map appears to be OK

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”Verifying file system.Using live mode.Performing live verification.Checking catalog hierarchy.Checking extended attributes file.Checking volume information. The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.File system check exit code is 0.

I run the same Disk Utility under normal setup after reboot.

Same results as above.

Never the less, the iMac started immediately to heat up again particularly at upper left corner top frame and back side. Also the colored wheel comes up during writing this text and before when checking/reading emails. Overall the iMac is very slow and interrupts at unpredictable times.

I checked the Activity Monitor:

CPU: Idle 98.25%

Phys. Memory 4GB

Memory used 2.44GB

Cache 1.47 GB

Swap used 0 bytes

Disk: Reads in: 197,943

Writes out: 25, 932

Reads in/sec: 0

Writes out/sec: 0

Does this give an clues?

Or: Is it really unavoidable that I carry this heavy iMac to the store?

Thanks for your feedback.

Jun 29, 2015 2:04 PM in response to ursw

I suggest you Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair (not verify) the disk and disk permissions from there.

Then rerun Etrecheck to see how many errors are still reported?

Is it really unavoidable that I carry this heavy iMac to the store?

I had to take my 27" iMac in and called the store to see if there's was a back door I could drive up to to deliver instead of having to lug it from a parking space a bit farther than I was willing to walk. I was told that they would come to the car and carrying it in for me. Also that once they began carrying it they would be responsible for any damage occurred in the transportation, i.e. an obvious drop. Being an Old Toad I immediately took them up on it. You might check at your store if you have to take it in.

Thank you for your help and tips recently.

However running the repair the HD (I did it about 5 times) was not enough and I finally completely erased the HD with the highest security option (took about 8 hours) and re-installed the OS. Then I reinstalled the Mac using the latest backup on Time Machine.

For now it works.

Anyway, thank you very much for your time and assistance.

Best wishes,

Urs

"For now" are the operative words.

If OS X Disk Utility reported 600 errors, there is a very, VERY STRONG chance that your Mac's internal hard drive is failing AND will FAIL.

Probably sooner than later!

If you don't want to lose ANY of your current or future data on that failing drive,

You need to ensure you have a complete backup of your system and data and plan/call to bring your Mac into an Apple store or Apple authorised repair center for free diagnosis and possible cost for hard drive replacement.

Get started using a proper local backup strategy.

Backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your Mac's entire computer system and data.

Good Luck!

Please start your own new unique post as your issues are different from this Original Poster's ( OP) issues that have already been solved.

Create a new thread and gives us more details about what you want to do, like what type, year and model Mac you have and what version of OS X is it running.

The more detail you can give us, the better all of us can help you with your Mac computer system and iPhone.

Thank You.
