I updated my VIber to the newest version (5.4.1) and once I opened Viber, all of my messages and call history were gone! I didn't delete and reinstall the app, I just updated it on my iPhone 5. I tried data recovery software but it doesn't work. Does anyone know what to do so I can recover my lost messages?

Exactly the same problem here. I was in the middle of using Viber when the app downloaded itself again. It then prompted me to request a new activation code before I could get into it. Once I was back in, all my chats were gone. iPhone Data Recovery can find nothing on the 'phone.

Viber just emailed me back saying there is no way of recovering any of the lost data 😟 they're saying this is a rare occurrence but and they are working on fixing it in the future. I don't understand how this happened with a single update.
Having exactly the same problem! I just did the update and all my messages and calls are gone! I've emailed viber as well. I really hope this is just a glitch with the update and they can fix it! I want my messages back!!
Yes that's exactly what happened to me! I updated it and when I opened the app, it asked me to request the activation code. I don't understand why their update would do something like this. I emailed Viber support to see what they say but I've received no reply yet...
Also, there are random chat groups that are created but have no messages in them. I think they are chat groups I had before the update but all the messages are deleted like the non group conversation ones.

Have you tried restoring your iPhone from a backup prior to updating Viber? If possible, give it a try.
How do you do that?
Assuming you have either iCloud or iTunes automatic updates enabled, or you manually back up to iCloud or iTunes, just restore your backup. If you don't routinely back up your iPhone, now would be a good time to start.
Seriously?! No way....that's crazy! I knew, when it asked me to enter my phone # I'm thinking something is NOT correct here! To put it nicely, that bites 😟 I had some important info saved on there. Not happy

Hi, I also had exactly the same experience yesterday, in identical circumstances to those outlined by David Cowling and freekidolpinz.
I also emailed Viber and they initially said nothing could be done. I persisted and have received the following response, which I'm yet to try:
"We have been working hard to find a solution for our users; we are now testing a possible solution that may allow you to retrieve some of the messages on your account if you have performed an iTunes back up before Viber updated to version 5.4.1.
Unfortunately, this procedure may not work if you backed up your phone via iCloud instead of iTunes, or if you did not back up your device at all.
If you backed up your phone via iTunes, please try the following:
Please let us know if restoring Viber to version 5.4 (or earlier) via iTunes restored your messages to your account.
If so, please do not update to Viber 5.4.1 for the time being.
If you did not create a recent back up of iTunes, I’m afraid there is currently no other way to restore these messages.

This worked. I got my chats back. I restored from backup on iTunes, fortunately made 27 June. I did lose chats and call history since then, and had to enter my phone number again, but that wasn't much. Lesson learned, don't update Viber whatever till it's been up a while without negative feedback. What a pain.
