We (fellow users) would have no way of knowing exactly why. It could've been hardware or software related. Usually if it's hardware related, it may happen again in the same way...note that I did say usually. Are you having a specific issue now with the device?

On Sunday when I turned it on, the screen was showing Hello in diff. language, like it's brand new. I have a few photos & notes that got lost. Then that night I restored it with iTunes that took about 3 hrs. Today it's working just fine but hopefully I can retrieve the photos & notes. Thanks.
