My iMac keeps crashing!

Question

My iMac keeps crashing!

My iMac keeps crashing when trying to access image files (I think they might only be files located on a raid attached to another mac). I repaired permissions and verified the disc and when I spoke to apple all they could say was "erase and reinstall yosemite". Which doesn't seem like much troubleshooting.

I keep getting crash reports so I wonder if they would be of any use to figure out what is happening as I would REALLY rather not do the whole erasing thing until it's absolutely a last resort.

Some type of hardware failure, I suspect that it is RAM related and one or more the RAM DIMMs installed is:

Incorrect RAM or
Failed RAM or
Unseated RAM

I would recommend reseating first and then re-test.

It's defective.

If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

Otherwise you may be entitled to a service visit at your site at no charge.

Check the RAM, if it is not the RAM, you still have some remaining warranty because its less than 1 year old. Also if you have not bought AppleCare, buy it immediately while you still can.
