I have been using Apples for 23 years, desktop, laptop, iPod, iPad, iPhone, etc. etc.
I have never been able to figure out how to use iTunes. I have hundreds of songs on my MacBook Pro, confined there forever because getting to my iPhone requires some kind of certification.

Being facetious. I have spent hours trying to transfer data between my computers and iPhones, including iPhones 4, 5, and now 6. It really is too much effort for the value. By "certification" I mean one needs to take classes, presumably, to make iTunes useful.
Then you must have chosen a convoluted manner of doing it. I spend no time at all on it and all photos and music are where I want them to be all the time.

I use a cable. Or, I select wifi to connect my iPhone to my MacBook Pro.
I just downloaded 9 songs from a CD so I could listen on my iPhone 6. The problem is, either way, the songs do not appear. My iPhone perpetually reads "no content."
What version of IOS and what version of iTunes and OS X, when using the cable is the iPhone recognized in the sidebar?
And are you using iTunes Match?
iOS 8.3, OSX 10.10.3 and iTunes 12.1.2.27.

Match comes with a bill, so probably not or you'd know.
Plug the phone in and start iTunes, when the phone appears in iTunes go to the music tab for the phone
