I have an iMac backed up on a HD. Can I connect this HD to my Mac Mini and back it up without a problem?

Any problem with backing up my Mac Mini on the same HD I have an iMac backed up on?

4. Can I back up 2 or more Macs to the same external HD?

Pondini was technically correct, however IMHO this is a bad practice. The reason is ALL EHDs will eventually fail, therefore when this drive fails it will lost the backups for not one but 2 machines. A sound backup plan plans for redundancy, yes this is a little more expensive however it's smart computing. Especially if you value any of the data you have stored such as your photos, music, films, financial and other irreplaceable items.

These two Macs are actually running software to operate our Two Head CNC Router.

The Mini has files that are old programs and will not run on Yosemite. I am going to backup on a HD just in case the new programs we have written with SWIFT/EXCODE decide to go south.

I do not leave the backup HD connected all the time since it is not necessary with this application. Therefore the HD should technically last longer.lol

I will probably erase the files on the Mini once I get a good copy so I can load Yosemite.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

In the business world, a single backup is not sufficient.

Not only should you have individual backups for each computer,

you should also have identical backups offsite at a minimum.

The offsite backups could be physical drives that are taken

elsewhere or on of the many cloud/internet solutions available.

A corollary to you Murphy's Law is you will find at some point in time

that you will have one less backup than you needed.

Cannot stress enough for business, backup, backup and then

backup some more.
