I am having trouble reinstalling snow leopard

I have a 2013 MBP 13"

I updated it to Yosemite in January and have been frustrated by how slow it has been since then. I decided to format the hard disk using disk utilities by holding the option key from boot up and then restarted the computer selecting to boot from CD in the startup menu at the top of the screen. Upon restarting I try to install snow leopard and after accepting the privacy conditions get to a screen asking me to select a disk to install it to. When I select Macintosh HD (the only option) it says that "Mac OS X cannot start up from this disk". There are no other options. Please help.

Thanks

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.1.x)

Clean Install of Snow Leopard

The following procedure will erase the drive and everything on it.

1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came

with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.

After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see

a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.

2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue

button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive

size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of

partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button

and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended

(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.

3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed

with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.

4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup

Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which

you will be running a fresh install of OS X. You can now begin the update process

by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your

installation current.

5. If you are planning to sell or give your computer away, then do the following:

After you reformat your hard drive and reinstall OS X, the computer restarts to a

Welcome screen and asks you to choose a country or region. If you want to leave

the Mac in an out-of-box state, don't continue with the setup of your system. Instead,

press Command-Q to shut down the Mac. When the new owner turns on the Mac,

the Setup Assistant will guide them through the setup process.

Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

I have my old iMac 2007 which used to run 10.6.8 I sold it, but then the hard drive went bad shortly after I did the high security erase of the hard drive. I was able to install the 10.6 OS disk and update to 10.6.8 but after 2 weeks, the hard drive would need repair, the reinstal and then the same thing would happen again 2 weeks later, crash freeze, etc. Finally, the hard drive was NOT repairable.

Anyway, first question: Does that highest level of security erase tend to destroy the drive or damage it? It's the 2nd time this has happened to one of my drives.

2nd Question: I sold the computer to a friend and had to set her up on an external boot up drive since the original drive was bad. I did this by installing it from the Snow Leopard disk.. It works fine, but it's running 10.6 now instead of the latest version, 10.6.8 When I try software update to get it from 10.6 to 10.6.8, I don't know whether it's just stuck, or frozen, or if it's just going to take hours and hours to get the update on and I'm just not waiting long enough.. OR, if Software Update is unable to choose the external drive to update it to 10.6.8. That's what I'm thinking, that software update via download is not able to update an external drive. Does anyone know the answer to this? Can an external drive OS be updated via Software Update from 10.6 to 10.6.8 combo ? Thanks.. I'd like to help her get it on her "new" computer which only has an external boot up drive. Thanks in advance!
