How resolve popup claiming to be from mac-protection.com with error code WBACK7917?

On Macbook Air, with OSX v10.7.5, while using Safari, got a popup which locked up use of Safari. The popup claimed to be from mac-protection.com. Said it was a critical security warning. Instructed to call "support" at 1-855-462-1908 and to provide error code WBACK7917. After a hard reboot the popup returned when I tried to re-use Safari.

What is this and how do I get rid of it?

Thanks,

Bob

A scam. Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, close Safari, and then launch it with the Shift key held down. If that doesn't work, temporarily disconnect the computer from the Internet and/or click here and run Adware Medic. You may need to download it from a different web browser.
