What is Photos, why did it show up, and does it duplicate photos from iPhoto?

1. Photos is the replacement for iPhoto. You can still use iPhoto if it’s the current version.
2. It was included with Mac OS X 10.10.3.
3. It creates a new library and uses hard links instead of duplicating the photos; the new library won’t take up much extra space.

Since you must be running Yosemite if you are seeing Photos, it would be an excellent idea to update your Profile to show the Yosemite version number 🙂
As Niel indicated, you can continue to use iPhoto if you wish. I am still using iPhoto/Aperture, but am also learning and exploring Photos at the same time.

I have an iMac, mid 2010. All of a sudden Photos showed up next to iphoto. Does this duplicate my photos? Where did the program come from? I already have duplicates that show up all over the place.
