Why isn't dictation working on iPhone 4s?

My mom just got an iPhone 4s a few weeks ago. The dictation feature for texting was working great until Saturday when her iPhone did an automatic update. Now, it only works sporadically and unreliably. Any suggestions that I can pass along via phone or text until I see her in person?
