iTunes 12 artist song count doesn't match status bar song count!

The following very much does not matter in the grand scheme of things, but it is a strange mystery all the same...the summary at the top of artist list on iTunes 12 shows a different total number of songs than the status bar. Selecting all songs confirms that the status bar is correct (so I haven't appeared to have lost 1262 songs). Can anyone shed light on what might be happening?
