I am having problems with my ppt transitions using office 2011 on my macbook pro. I am running OS X 10.9. When I select transitions, I get an error code and the program closes. Can anyone help?

I am using macbook pro (OS X 10.9) and microsoft for mac 2011 version. When I try to add transitions or animation to any slide or project, I get "Powerpoint encountered an error and needs to quit." This happens all the time. It only happens all of the time with my macbook, but it didn't happen with my iMac which is a much older version. Any ideas? I use my macbook much more than I use my imac so its important to fix it.
