Speaking to someone without AppleCare

I have an iPad 3rd Gen, bought in 2012.

I am trying to register it with the gadget insurance that comes with my bank account but as I do not have a proof of purchase it is proving problematic. It was a gift, from a now ex-boyf, who also emmigrated, so no chance of getting one. I have the packing slip that came in the box, but it has his name and his old address on it, plus no serial number or anything that links it to my iPad specifically.

The insurance company told me to contact Apple - but I can't get to speak to anyone on the technical support line without paying £25!

Having the same issue with my iPhone too... bought that second hand, so I so have proof of purchase of an IPhone 5S 16GB.... but I need something with the IMEI on.

Any ideas?

Starting to think it isn't worth the hassle.
