how do I set up another monitor two my iMac (24-inch, Early 2009)?

When I plug my Thunderbolt cable into my iMac and then another into my laptop nothing appears in the display settings??

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

The early 2009 iMacs do not support Target Display mode and

no Mac laptop supports being used as a display.
