problems coonecting to internet using windows xp

I am having problems connecting to the internet using windows XP. I have tried using WIFI and ethernet and each time it states that i am connected but nothing happens.Ihave tried repairing connection but made no difference. The internet works fine on wifi via the mac side .When using firefox the program just hangs with the the connecting wheel spinning.I need to use the internet to update panda antivirus.I only use XP for one program and that is internet based .This problem has happend before and i had a pc repair person look at it and he gave up .The next time i used xp it all worked ok.I am not familiar with windows at all so i do not know what to do .
