which app do i download to get access to the emoji keyboard?

Emoji keyboard should be available by default.

Open your keyboard, then press and hold the button. In the list, select the emoji keyboard.

If you don't see this keyboard, go to Settings - General - Keyboard. Open Keyboards - Add New Keyboard and select Emoji.
