Insert the Installer/Utilities DVD you have.

Restart your Mac while holding the Alt/Option key.

A search ensues where every possible boot device is scanned for potential bootability. This takes as long as several minutes.

Choose the 10.6 Installer/Utilities DVD, and proceed.

Answer only the "what language" question, and wait up to a quarter minute while the MenuBar is drawn.

Choose Disk Utility off a Menu that appears.

If you proceed down the path toward Install, the Utilities will NOT appear, and you must start over.
