Getting frequently frustrated with this - not long had yosemite - but since installation I can no longer open dock items without having to first quite them completely and reopen. Mail will never open from dock - I have to click on file and open a new viewer window - driving me nuts!! any advice please. Oh and a restart does not solve the issue!

Someone has been using a bit torrent to download software, likely stolen software. Along with it they likely installed some malware. My recommendation is to take the machine in, have them wipe it totally clean and then manually reinstall any third party apps using the media and license keys that came with it.

Let the repair shop know the computer was used with a bit torrent. if the machine is infected then so is the backup. In short you must be extremely careful restoring from TM!!!!
Thank for all that advice - took it to repair - apparently it was something to do with cache files blocking the memory? Also had malware on one of the browsers? Gonna have to learn how to keep cache files clean?
Cache files are generally harmless, your issue was the malware that was installed. Glad it is now taken care of.
Hi - sorry to have to come back to you on this one 😟 I have the original problem returned - particularly with my mail app. I have contacted the repair man who says that is likely to be a problem with the operating system!! Gulp! He suggested that I reinstall the Mail app and if that if doesn't solve the problem then I would have to do a complete system re install! Oh no - I cant cope with this - firstly can someone guide me through deleting my mail and reinstalling - I have so many folders and saved emails... got no idea how to start this one! thank you.
The Mail app is part of the operating system and cannot be removed by itself. I suspect you did not take the computer to an Apple Store, but some other repair place. Am I correct?
yes - I took it to Mac repairs in Cockfosters... Im going to try and do this myself - I have just made a copy of Yosemite onto a usb to use as bootable drive. I now have to decide how to copy and back up all my photos and documents - I noticed too that I do not have a library under my user name. All so weird? I only have the printer details in the folder?? I have other uses on the Mac - so do I have to copy their files individually or can I copy the user? thank you! x
