I have smashed my phone, damaged the display and its also water damaged. I was told in the apple store that Apple would give me a replacement for £200 but i did not have enough money at the time. I have now gathered enough funds to get a replacement but do i have to make an appointment or can i just turn up freely?

Depends on the store and the time of the year. If you are going to the main downtown NY store on the day the next iPhone launches, your wait in line may span more than a day. Else in some Store in a less transited venue and in the calm of a nothing-to-do Wednesday, the Geniuses might even trip over each other in order to grab something to do and stave off boredom.
Safest bet, make an appointment and avoid chances.
