For those upgrading to iOS 8.4
In order to use the new Apple Music service, iOS devices will have to upgrade to v8.4, provided your model is eligible. This includes all those already on any of the previous iOS 8 releases (8.0-8.3). iPhone 4 and previous models cannot use iOS 8. Besides Apple Music, 8.4 offers a variety of improvements and solves the infamous "Messages reboot" problem when you got a text message with Unicode characters.
In order to successfully upgrade your phone, consider this:
- Make a BACKUP of the device before starting, Will save your nerves later if things go bad. Best is via iTunes on a computer and local storage, but even via iCloud is better than nothing.
- Make sure you have enough free space on the device before starting.
- For people upgrading Over The Air: If moving from 8.3 to 8.4, plan on having at least 2GB free. If moving from 8.2 or earlier, including iOS 7, 6, etc., have at least 6GB free.
- If you upgrade using iTunes on a computer (Mac preferred): 1-2GB is usually enough, regardless of the version, since the installer will be downloaded, verified and unpacked on the computer instead of the device, thus saving temp space.
- Have patience. EVERYONE will want to upgrade and the servers will have heavy load. Plus the installers can be big and download times may be lengthy. Likewise, try to get the best connectivity you can for improved throughput.
- Be sure to upgrade a lll your apps as well, so you benefit from the newer and improved versions as well. Some older apps may not work well or at all in the newer iOS releases since it incorporates better security measures.
Good luck!
