I am travelling abroad for a year and leaving my imac behind. Can I copy my itunes library to a hard drive and use it with my laptop?

Yes. Copy the entire iTunes folder to the drive. Start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and select the iTunes folder on the external. Remember to always have the external on before starting iTunes or it will present an error message.
