Q: iOS 8.4 music app

*** apple? iOS 8.4 music app and the radio that you are pushing on us. I didn't want it when it first came out as I have my own music selection. I tried radio and it sucked, now 8.4 forces apple radio onto the unwary. I couldn't believe all the music I deleted from my devices you automatically made me follow these artist who I no longer have interest in. It will take a little getting used to the new music app, it has some good things but gee. Some people may like the radio but for me it just didn't interest me. Also not all countries have the freedom of cheap Internet data, so to use apple radio it is just nasty on data costs. I think I hear Steve Jobs screaming ***

After updating to 8.4, ALL of my purchased music was showing up on my phone. I manually manage my music, and stuff that should only be on my home computers that I bought for my kids is showing up. This *****.

Yes but apple could do something similar to Foxtel mobile. All the TV I stream is free and I only pay a $3 subscription per week with unlimited data.

Sadly, I think it has dissappeared.

Also, does anyone know if I can tell Apple about the repeat song thing? I really want to know why they did that.

You can always call them....  But I think I solved that mystery:

When in your Songs there is no shuffle icon - so you have to start playing a song.  You can pause and play from there, but clicking in the MIDDLE of the song bar on the bottom of the screen (title/artist) will bring it up in full screen mode.  From there you will see the Shuffle and Repeat icons - so mine was set to Repeat which why the next/skip arrow didn't work, just re-started the song.  Looking carefully, there is a grayish square that outlines the icon(s) to indicate if the feature is on. AND that is where the controls are when in the music app (vs the lock screen - which didn't work right either for me - Doh!)  Closing the full screen puts you back at your music list.

Same thing when in a Playlist - although here you actually see the shuffle icon.  Once you get the settings right, hitting the shuffle keeps shuffling the songs (vs using the >> arrows.

Good luck.  I did have to do this more than once in my Songs, but that may be due to a re-start as I was having "ghost" music issues.

I also would like to know what has happened to 'shake to shuffle'.  How do we get Apple to answer this?

Yup, same, tempted to go back to factory settings and not take 8.4... Or is that out of the question now too?

8.4 is the only option now. 8.3 is no longer signed by Apple so when it communicates with their servers it forces you to download and install 8.4

Well, that is an improvement, but it no longer displays the length of the album or lets me use the little thing in the upper right corner to select a song from a particular album, so it still kind of stinks.

i guess usability testing wasn't used when they made the 8.4 music gui...

The developers have successfully obfuscated the entire music gui.

sure hope iOS 9 found better ui developers to fix this mess

Now I am using an app call "Listen". Simple, enjoyable to use, especially when driving and no nonsense.

I had ALL of the same gripes, and there is a solution to ALL of them: TuneShell.

This is the best music app I've seen since the old school ios native music players...you know, back when things were simple:

    1. No "Apple Music" nonsense.

    2. Imports iTunes library, including playlists.

    3. In-app EQ settings.

    4. Easily shuffle songs--all of them, or by certain artists...like the good ol' days.

    5. Can bring up the album of the current song (Why ios 8.4 would get rid of that is beyond me.)

    6. Black color theme--doesn't blind you at night. You can change to white as well.

    7. Includes current "Hot 100 songs/albums" playlists, but you can choose to delete them if you want.

    8. SoundCloud integration made available, but doesn't try to shove it down your throat (ala Apple Music) if you don't use it.

    9. Turn the phone sideways, and that cool 'album scroll' is back.

    10. Closing out the app also turns off the music. (Some apps just mask the ios 8.4 player, so the music keeps playing thru the native player...annoying.)

    11. Re-opening app takes you back to the song you were last listening to.

    12. Click on a song, on you're taken to the play screen (duh)...not just a little tiny bar at the bottom, causing you to take your eyes off the road and rear-end someone.

Bottom line, it's very intuitive and user-friendly like the old school players. There are both free and paid versions; I paid for the upgrade.  If you're as annoyed with the 8.4 native player as I was, it's well worth it. And no, I'm not a paid spokesman/TuneShell employee...just a guy who liked all the simple iTunes/ios versions.  I also miss N64 and my Samsung A707 flip phone...that thing was a classic haha.

After 6 months of Android, I just ran back to Apple, with a new Iphone 6 because I was missing too much how things usually works flawlessly and effortlessly on Apple devices.
What a bummer when I saw what they did on Music app! now it's the less usable and user friendly app I've ever seen (not to mention I just don't care about Apple music and it took ages to sync correctly all my albums with itunes! ).

So thank you Chris for sharing this app! it has everything I loved about the old Music app.
