Q: 10.10.4 install bricked my iMac 27"!

I just downloaded 10.10.4 onto my iMac 27" and on re-start my Mac is only displaying a white screen. No Apple logo, no lighting up the second monitor, nothing.

 

What can I do to try to get my Mac working again?

Ok,

 

drives mounted and Mac restarting as normal once more.

 

The final steps to recovery were to delete the Western Digital files remaining after the uninstall. These were (in my case):

com.westerndigital.WDDriveUtilities.plist

com.westerndigital.WD-Drive-Manager-Installer.plist

WD1394HPDriver.kext and

WDUSBHPDriver.kext

    I am worried I have the same issue. I just bought a WD external drive yesterday and loaded it. I did load the WD software initially to erase the drive but used disk utility instead.

     

    Now mine hangs on the boot at the Apple and Progress Bar and then goes to a white screen.

     

    How did you delete these files?  I need to do the same. Assume somehow via safe mode boot?

    Hey keithu2fan,

     

    I deleted the files by first using the uninstall app that came with the WD software, and then searching for any files with wd in the filename, and also any with western in it.

     

    Be aware not all files with wd in the name are Western Digital.

     

    You may also need to make hidden files visible in the Finder for this to work (I did). Here's quick instructions on how to do that, in case you are unaware http://ianlunn.co.uk/articles/quickly-showhide-hidden-files-mac-os-x-mavericks/

    Sorry.  I am not as versed in mac recovery.  How can I even get to my hard drive to run that - via safe mode boot?

    When you say "How can I even get to my hard drive to run that" - what are you trying to run?

    Keith, you should star a new thread, describe your problem and give details of your environment (Mac, OS X etc) rather than further confusing this thread. When you have a thread of your own please link to it in this one.

    Csound.  Respectfully the "confusion" is Tom has the EXACT same problem I have and I suspect because of the Western Digital software.  How he went from he is "Bricked" to able to uninstall the WD software is my question. I am assuming a Safe Mode reboot?  The steps are not documented from what I could tell.

     

    BUT - Since you asked. I do have my own thread already!    OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 upgrade is not completing! Apple Logo and Progress bar stop then disappear about half way through!

    Unplug everything and reboot to Safe Mode, then use the WD supplied uninstaller to remove the software. Manually remove anything left over, note that OSX's wireless diagnostics has files starting with WD, don't remove them.

    I am afraid the uninstaller is loaded on the external drive so I will have to see if I can get into Safe Mode with it recognizing that drive.  I only installed the WD Smartware software and not any of the extras.

    Don't improvise

     

    Boot to safe mode and download the uninstaller from the web site, just like Tom did.
