Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

iPhoto Spinning Beachball

I just got back from vacation, turned my macbook pro on, and tried to launch iPhoto so I could import my vacation photos into the library. Everything here worked fine six weeks ago when I did the shutdown, but now I have a "spinning beachball" problem similar to the cases I've read about here ... but with a twist?

Here's What Happens:

When I launch iPhoto, the program starts and seems like it might actually work. I can see the thumbnails. I can see the list of photo albums. Everything looks perfectly normal. Then, before I can interact with the library in any way, the spinning beachball appears and no interaction is possible. I've left it overnight and woke up to see the beachball still spinning.

The "Solutions" That Fail(ed):

These are the things I've tried in order to resolve this problem.

  1. Delete the iPhoto cache and plist - moved these files to the trash, emptied the trash, launched iPhoto -> beachball.
  2. Turn off Airport - launched iPhoto -> beachball
  3. Remove ALL network connections - launched iPhoto -> beachball
  4. Tried a NEW library - launched iPhoto with the option key depressed, chose the option to create a new library, and this new (empty)_ library has the same problem as my other pre-existing libraries.
  5. Rebuilt iPhoto database - launched iPhoto with [option][command], selected 1st 2 options (rebuild databse & repair), process completed but did not fix the problem

Something That Sorta Worked:

I keep my iPhoto library on an external drive, and I have access to other Apple computers. In this case, I took the photo library over to an early Mac Mini and accessed my iPhoto library with no problem! So the difficulty seems to be with my MacBook Pro and not with the photo library itself?

Some Particulars

Since i cannot interact with iPhoto, I can't give a lot of specifics about the software version or how the preferences are set up? So some of this info is my best recollection:

  • iPhoto version - I *think* its iPhoto 11 (version 9.2.3)
  • Mac OS - 10.6.8
  • Photos in library - about 23,000 in one library. Zero in the other library. Both fail.
  • MacBook model - MacBookPro1,2 Intel Core Duo

Anyone know how to fix this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Don't know if this is really a solution, but I found a way past this problem. By logging into my MacBook Pro under a different user account, I was able to access my photo library with no problems. After that, I logged out then back in using my usual account - and was able to acces my photo library with no problems. So, at least THIS problem is solved.

Jul 1, 2015 9:34 AM in response to Searchcz

You have 3 reasons for the poor performance of you Mac:

1 - 2 GB RAM - That entirely not enough RAM to be running all you're running efficiently. However, you're not running into lots of pageouts and since that's the most RAM that model can use you'll have to address the other two reasons.

2 - Macintosh (disk0s2) / [Startup]: 117.27 GB (14.88 GB free) (Low!) - You're at the minimum of free space for efficient performance of the system and applications. Do not let it fall below what you have now. Wouldn't hurt to increase the free space if you can.

3 - Now for the real problem:

[loaded] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.helperTool.plist [Click for support]

[loaded] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.trashSizeWatcher.plist [Click for support]

[loaded] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.volumeWatcher.plist [Click for support]

You have installed some serious malware: Clean my Mac 2. It's malware. Read this published articles: Watch out for CleanMyMac 2.

Remove it according do the developers instructions. You can check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name and the developer's name in the file name. For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Remember, Macs do not need any "cleaning", "optimizing" or antivirus apps. So don't be suckered into using any of them.

I think I have a better handle on this. Do you see anything else I ought to kill?
