How to restore an I-Phone from a previous back-up

Hopefully someone can advise and help, before my I-phone 4S went faulty I was able to successfully back-up the phone to I- Tunes before it crashed. I have now transferred my sim to an I-Phone 4 which I previously used. It appears to have most of my contacts and apps, but I'm not sure how. Perhaps when I set up my I-Cloud account they were restored through this.

My question, how do I restore from I Tunes, all my apps and contacts from the I- phone 4S to the I-phone 4.

iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.2

You can not restore a backup made with a later version of iOS (e.g. iOS 8.x) to a device running an earlier version (e.g. iOS 7.x). If your 4S was running iOS 8, you will not be able to restore the backup to an iPhone 4.

Thanks for the very prompt response. I'm lucky the vast majority of my contacts are on the I-Phone 4, but I'm intrigued, how are they there. Where they stored on the phone, when I transferred from the 4 to the 4S.i

If they were synced to iCloud or another cloud service they will transfer. They are not part of the backup except to preserve the favorites list. There is a difference between data synced to a cloud service, and data contained in a backup.
