Which Apple ID should I use for Apple Music Family account?

Like many people, I have two Apple IDs: the one I use for purchases that I created at the dawn of the iTunes store, and the one I use for all things iCloud when that service came on line.

I use iCloud Family Sharing, and the primary account is the iCloud ID. WHen I try to activate an Apple Music Family account, I am prompted to use the iTunes associated Apple ID. Does it matter if the primary Apple ID for these two services is different?

I too used iTunes when it first launched, and so have an Apple ID tied to loads of purchases - and another that has been used for years to sync calendars, data, etc.

To make Family Sharing work, one must use the Apple ID tied to purchases as your primary ID. The other ID can then be used as a separate iCloud account. I configure mine so that the "purchases" ID is used for iTunes Store, Photos, Safari bookmarks, Backups, Keychain, Find my iPhone and Passbook. The other iCloud ID is used for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders & Notes.

I would like to have all this consolidated under one account, but at present there isn't a nice clean way to do that. What's nice is that once this is all setup, it works very well and so I don't have to think much about it.

I'm happy to use the Apple ID tied to purchases for both family sharing AND iTunes music. What happens when I sign in to my old account to update purchases? Does all my music suddenly disappear?
