Cannot reinstall podcasts app

I uninstalled the podcasts app on my iPod and now it fails to reinstall. Other apps (re)install fine. I press 'Install'. It changes to 'Installing' but on step 3 of the sync the app disappears from my iPod and the button reverts to 'Install'. Tried restarting macbook. Tried authorising and reauthorising iTunes. Tried resetting iPod, all with no success. Tried installing 2 other apps that play podcasts (Soundcloud, Stitcher) but they have the same problem (unlike other no-podcast playing apps which are fine). ios6.1.6

iPod touch, iOS 6.1.6

Correction: It changes to 'Will Install' (not 'Installing') but on step 3 of the sync the app disappears from my iPod and the button reverts to 'Install'.

I suspect that you have a later version of the apps in your iTunes library that are not compatible with iOS 6.1.6. Try:

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
