Q: windows boot option is suddenly missing

Hi, two or three ago suddenly the boot option for Windows has disappeared. It is an Imac 27 inch, late 2013 model on OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D136)

No i can only start OSX and it seems that windows was never there? How can i restore this? I normaly press ALT and then two boot options show up, recently only OSX. I did not changed anything. What i did see in the deleted items is a couple of files since the last days, maybe this is related?

    You currently have

    disk0 (SSD) - Empty

disk1 (HDD) - OSX and Recovery HD and Bootcamp.

disk2  - WININSTALL - This may cause problems when installing Windows. Can you use a 8+ GB USB2  flash drive instead of this disk?

disk3 - this should be ejected. Adobe Installer.

disk4,5 - These look like your Windows Installation Media.

    disk6 - ?

When the OSX was installed, it did not rebuild the Fusion drive.

    You have the following options.

    1. Split the SSD into two equal parts - OSX (60GB) and Bootcamp (60GB). Install Windows. Rebuild the Fusion drive using SSD (60GB) part and the entire HDD.

    2. Install Windows on the HDD Bootcamp part on disk1. Backup OSX. Rebuild Fusion disk and restore the backup of OSX to the Fusion drive.

    3. Same as 1, but split the HDD in half as well. Make one half a part of the Fusion disk for OSX, and use the second HDD part as 'shared' storage between OSX and Windows by using FAT or exFAT file system. (My Macminis are setup this way. This gives me SSD speeds for both OSes.) The downside is that the C: OS drive for Windows is only 60GB. I use the HDD part as Windows D: drive after the split.

Once you pick an option, we can proceed further.

    1. Backup OSX as it is now.

    2. Do not use Untitled.

    3. Try to install using the 1TB WININSTALL and the HDD Bootcamp Part. Pick Macintosh HD, NO NAME.

    4. After Windows is fully installed, post the output of sudo fdisk /dev/disk1 (this will record the MBR on this discussion).

    5. We can rebuild the Fusion drive without touching the BC partition and restore OSX from the backup made in step 1.

Yes. Once you have TM backup, we can erase the SSD/HDD (OSX Part) and rebuild it into a Fusion drive.

Ones the TM backup is ready i will try to install using bootcamp and the external 1TB (wininstall) to install windows on Macintosh HD No Name. This wil make it One OS X partition. Is this right?

Will OS X still boot then?

The TM backup is for restoring your OSX side only.

Your BC partition is on the HDD. We will leave it untouched. We will erase the other partitions (disk1s2 and disk1s3) and create a Fusion drive using disk0s2 (SSD) and disk1s2 (HDD) and then restore OSX. to this Fusion drive.

The BC part will be left untouched. If we run into any issues, we can rebuild the MBR on disk1. Yes, after the restore, OSX should also boot properly.

Are you able to switch between OS X and Windows without any issues and are the Bootcamp drivers fully installed?

On your BC USB, there is a Bootcamp folder which contains a setup.exe. Can you run it and check Device Manager for any unknown devices?

    1. Backup OSX on an external TM disk to Time Capsule.

    2. Do you have an external device where you can create a NTFS partition and backup Windows?

Can you post the output of the diskutil list just for recording purposes?
