Q: windows boot option is suddenly missing

Hi, two or three ago suddenly the boot option for Windows has disappeared. It is an Imac 27 inch, late 2013 model on OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D136)

No i can only start OSX and it seems that windows was never there? How can i restore this? I normaly press ALT and then two boot options show up, recently only OSX. I did not changed anything. What i did see in the deleted items is a couple of files since the last days, maybe this is related?

From OSX Terminal. It should already be included in your PATH.

The following steps are specific to your scenario, and are not generally used.

You need to use the following steps. If you see any error messages during the following steps, please stop and post back here with the error message. The following steps have values from your GPT and Testdisk output (and you can verify) in Steps 9, 10, 14 and 15. Please notice the '+' sign in step 15 (this is called offset notation). The text in parentheses is for informational purpose to describe the action being taken. Gdisk has one-character commands except when entering numbers.

Rebuild GPT2 and GPT3 using start/end offsets and size for HDD.

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk1
    2. P  (print the full list of parts)
    3. D  (delete)
    4. 3  (part 3)
    5. D (delete)
    6. 2 (part 2)
    7. N  (new part)
    8. 2  (part 2)
    9. 409640 ( - Start offset in sectors or the start point for Bootcamp part)
    10. 1375342416 ( - Absolute end sector)
    11. AF05 (Core Storage part type)
    12. N (new part)
    13. 3
    14. 1375342417 ( - Start offset in sectors or the start point for Bootcamp part)
    15. +292966400 ( - End size offset. Different from Step 10 with the '+' sign)
    16. 0700
    17. P  (print list of all parts just to see what changes will be made)
    18. W (Write the new GPT)
    19. Y  (Yes! really write the new GPT)

This will delete and re-write the GPT partition info for /dev/disk0s2 and /dev/disk0s3.

You need to Reboot for OSX to read the new partition information.

    Please post the output of

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s3 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?

Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?

Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

Depending on results, we can proceed further.

Can you boot into Internet Recovery (Command + Opt + R) - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support ? Changing CS volumes can be a risky procedure.

OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support should be the next logical step, if possible.

Instead of using OSX on the external disk, you can also use a Linux Live CD (on USB) like Knoppix, Hiren's Boot CD or similar software. The Linux Live CDs should also have GPT Fdisk (gdisk) so it will make it a bit easier to put the old GPT on the HDD back.

When we modified the HDD GPT, OSX did not like the change. We also 'stole' the Recovery part on the HDD, which the CS volume is complaining about.

How much disk space do you think your OSX installation occupies, not allocated. If the used space will fit on the SSD part, one option is to remove the HDD from the CS volume, if OSX GPT can be fixed.

Please boot from the external HD. We should look at the the GPT, and change it back, if necessary to the old one you have posted here. We need to continue searching for other MS Data partitions.

Can you install GPT Fdisk on the volume that you are currently booting from?

Once you have it in place, we can revert to the older GPT and test if the internal HD will boot from OS X. The other option is to scan the internal disk while booted from the external disk via Testdisk. It may not make much difference in the results, but the scan will be a bit faster.
