Q: windows boot option is suddenly missing

Hi, two or three ago suddenly the boot option for Windows has disappeared. It is an Imac 27 inch, late 2013 model on OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D136)

No i can only start OSX and it seems that windows was never there? How can i restore this? I normaly press ALT and then two boot options show up, recently only OSX. I did not changed anything. What i did see in the deleted items is a couple of files since the last days, maybe this is related?

Hi, what upgrade? I never changed anything to the original windos partition size? Maybe windows downloaded automatically an update i don't know. From start the windows partition was always small but until a few weeks ago it worked perfectly. The only thing I can think of is the announced  that windows made to upgrade to windows 10 (I was running 7) but I don't think that the download did already start....

It is unlikely that W10 Upgrade notice is an issue. There is an Installation log of all software installed which contains history that App Store normally does not show. Can you look at the log? You can click on 'Install Date' and sort the list by date. Here is an example from my system.

Most likely, the Yosemite Recovery Update is responsible. Testdisk is unable to show other partitions. Is your Testdisk list from a Deeper Search output, just for confirmation?

Hi, i can not find the installation log? how do i open it, where is it? About the testdisk, I think that the deeper search comes next. Now i can select a partition from the list and after selecting it shows the command Deeper Search....

But as i just pressed escape now everything is gone and i see the screen below again. I think i need to do it all again? It took all night.....Schermafbeelding 2015-07-05 om 14.51.37.png

    1. The Installation log can be found in About This Mac -> System Report -> Software -> Installations.

    2. You have posted screen shots of the Testdisk output. The MS Data entries that we have seen so far do not seem to work. Let us see what you installation log show. It should help determine next steps. You do not need to run it now.

The two updates on 3 May 2015 14:49 (OS X Yosemite Herstel-update and OS X Update) are the most likely suspects. Has Windows worked since this date?

The next MS Data entry that we can test is this one. We are still using the the 139GB size rather than the 2880 sectors as Testdisk shows. We are also going to create a Recovery HD part using your Testdisk at the location 1659286408 with size 1269760 sectors to match the current size.

GPT3 StartGPT 3 SizeGPT3 EndSector OffsetNTFS StartNTFS SizeNTFS EndSector Offset (GB)NTFS Size (GB)
    195225536812697601953525127-28247782016710473072929664001964013706-134.6959209139.6972656

We can test the next available MS Data and check if both OS X and Windows will work.

Rebuild GPT2 and GPT3 using start/end offsets and size for HDD.

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk1
    2. P  (print the full list of parts)
    3. D  (delete)
    4. 2 (part 2)
    5. D (delete)
    6. 3 (part 3)
    7. N  (new part)
    8. 2  (part 2)
    9. 409640 ( - Start offset in sectors or the start point for Bootcamp part)
    10. 1671047306 ( - Absolute end sector)
    11. AF05 (Core Storage part type)
    12. N (new part)
    13. 3 (part 3)
    14. 1659286408 ( - Start offset in sectors or the start point for Bootcamp part)
    15. + 1269760 ( Relative offset End sector)
    16. AB00 (Recovery HD)
    17. N (new part)
    18. 4 (part 4)
    19. 1671047307 ( - Start offset in sectors or the start point for Bootcamp part)
    20. 1964013706 ( - Absolute End sector)
    21. 0700 (NTFS part)
    22. P  (print list of all parts just to see what changes will be made)
    23. W (Write the new GPT)
    24. Y  (Yes! really write the new GPT)

This will delete and re-write the GPT partition info for /dev/disk0s2, /dev/disk0s3 and /dev/disk0s4.

You need to Reboot for OSX to read the new partition information.

    Please post the output of

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

Please also test booting from the internal disk OSX partition.

Type 'q' to quit out of this session. Start again and change step 10 to 1659286407 (one sector before the start of Recovery HD), this will avoid overlapping partitions and run the Gdisk steps and test.

Go to main menu, x to experts menu, l to 1, and try the strps again.
