Q: windows boot option is suddenly missing

Hi, two or three ago suddenly the boot option for Windows has disappeared. It is an Imac 27 inch, late 2013 model on OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D136)

No i can only start OSX and it seems that windows was never there? How can i restore this? I normaly press ALT and then two boot options show up, recently only OSX. I did not changed anything. What i did see in the deleted items is a couple of files since the last days, maybe this is related?

This is an example of a valid NTFS header from my MBP which has Bootcamp on it.

Can you download a trial version of http://www.stellarinfo.com/mac-osx-recovery.php and see if it can rebuild the MFT and show you your files?

I am puzzled and surprised that it shows up as FAT, not NTFS. The 791+134 is ~925 GB on a 999 GB disk.

and the result.......no data found. Maybe I must accept the fact that i lost my windows partition, fix the IOS and reinstall with bootcamp windows and the rest of the software, don't you think? Or do have a more positive opinion?  It seems a difficult case......

The FAT partition has lost all its NTFS characteristics.

One option to test, before you reinstall OSX and Windows completely and start over again, is to use a tool that comes with Testdisk called PhotoRec. Please see http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec for details. Try it and see what you can recover.

Another option is to make the current file system FAT (instead of us trying to make it NTFS) and try to see if Windows Startup Repair will rebuild NTFS. This requires repeating the steps on page 5  and choosing it to be FAT (0B00 or 0C00) rather than NTFS (0700). I suggest you try it, before you completely start over.

You do not need to boot from the internal disks, since you have the ability to boot from an external disk. You do not need to delete any partitions or run Gdisk. There is a simpler method.

Please ignore any i386 MBR errors messages, but stop if you see any others.

    sudo fdisk -e /dev/rdisk1

    p

    setpid 4

    0B

    p

    w

    y

Test. Switch 0B to 0C and test again if it fails.

Based on your first diskutil list, disk1s4 should be the Microsoft Data. Did it change?

If the 0B setting did not work, 0C is unlikely to work, but you can try it. Do you have another Mac? If yes, Target Disk Mode is much easier.
