Why does the 10.10.4 update freeze the App Store App on my 2011 mac min?

Wanted the update, opened the app store app. no go. The wheel spins and spins, the fan speeds up, the mini gets hot, and every other time the application will admit it's not responding. What should I do? This update didn't "just work" 😟
