How do you ghost a photo for use as a background for the original photo itself?

Got a demo image of what you're trying to accomplish? I'm guessing you'll need a 3rd party image editor that handles layers.

Some Image Editors That Support layers:

Photoshop Elements 11 for Mac - $79

GraphicConverter - $40Rainbow Painter - $30
Imagerie - $38
Acorn - $50

Pixelmator - $60

Seashore - Free

GIMP for Mac - Free

Xee 2.1 - free

That can be easily done with PSE and layers and Pages.

With Pages drag the first image into the page layout and expand to fill the page. Then drag each of the other photos into the page, resize and place where you want it. It's somewhat easier with Pages than PSE.

I created this 86 page collage with a Pages type of app: drag, resize and place.

As far a ghosting it looks like the back image has been desaturated a bit. That you can do with iPhoto, PSE and Pages
