Q: iOS 8.4 screen rotation not working

iPad Air 2, 64 GB.  After updating to iOS 8.4 screen rotation NOT consistently working.  I have verified the screen lock setting in the control panel Is NOT set and I have done several hard resets (hold power button and home together).  rotation works for awhile then stops working, another hard reset fixes it.  This did NOT happen with iOS 8.3.  Anyone else seeing the problem?

Switching off reduced motion is the work around needed but as this ins one of the first things I change on every iOS-device I hope for an 8.4.1, too.

Don't they test that? Also since iOS 8.x reduce transparency removes optical feedback from the keyboard (i.e. keys turning gray when pressend).

Tte optical feedback keyboard issue when Reduce Transparency is enabled started with iOS 7, not iOS 8...and remains to this day.

Totally agree, bud... And thanks for the workaround.

It was another user who said we had a "solution", and on forums like these, that concerns me...

I'd hate for the press, or Apple, to think that we have a solution for this silly issue.. When in reality, we do not.

Having said that... Your workaround sounds great!

Great catch SergZak. I'll repost it below. Now fire up the grill and enjoy the day.

I seem to have found the setting that causes the rotation issue is manifest itself. If would help if others could try this and report back... If the Reduce Motion setting is turned ON under Settings/General/Accessibility/Reduce Motion, the screen will not rotate correctlyIf the Reduce Motion setting is turned OFF under Settings/General/Accessibility/Reduce Motion, the screen will rotate correctly I have always enabled Reduce Motion since it was introduced in iOS 7 as it is just personally annoying to me. Also note that this setting does not affect the ~1 second delayed startup. This seems to point to the two issues (delayed unlock & no screen rotation) now being unrelated as I originally thought.

It works. I was going to leave a message that everyone who was helped by your solution should mark the post on page 4 as this helped me.  Unfortunately  4 people already marked it as helpful. So with my vote you were voted in as a helpful answer. Well done.

No problem, buddy. As long as I could provide a work-around for other users with the issue & was able to discover cause/effect for my own peace of mind, that's more than enough for me. Like I mentioned before in another post, I've been doing this kind of thing for over 30 years beginning with Apple & Atari computers. It's pretty much what I strive for (solving/discovering issues)...although I do seem to be getting much lazier about it after all this time.

Thank you! It's good to have this work-around. I will stay with 8.4 now.

Yes, the reduce motion setting seems to be the culprit.  It's one of the first things I tweak also.

i haven't decided which is more annoying the flashing, swooping motion or not having the screen NOT rotate.

But the whole experience reminded me to always make a backup Before what should be even a minor upgrade.  My previous one was 6 months old.

i Haven't upgraded my iPhone 6, having seen comments about battery life issues.

    Hey all,

i just wanted to let you know that deactivated the Reduce Motion feature last night (was ready to grin and bare the fly-ins and fly-outs!), yet unfortunately, the rotation lock issue reared its ugly head twice this morning...

If it works for y'all, then great!

But no dice here at my end.

@Serg - my first computer was a TRS-80 Model III.  I splurged and even got the top of the line 16KB version!

Count me in, I'm also having this annoying problem. After updating to 8.4 ota, the auto rotation doesn't work and I t's not locked. I have to push the on/off button and then the home button to make it rotate again. I have tried hard resetting the iPad, but that doesn't work. I have the latest iPad Air 2 Wifi

Definitely a good workaround for now. Thank-you. However a bit disappointing such a thing happens during an upgrade to 8.4.

I Am working off an iPad Air 2 64GB WiFi.

Now that I turned on the motion feature on all my iOS devices, I really like the feature.

    All rotation works fine.
