Updated to 10.10.4, seeing black screen, drive won't mount

Updated to 10.10.4 and am seeing several issues on an iMac. Have repaired permissions, run a drive check each time, reset PRAM, and cleared all cache using Yosemite Cache Cleaner. Cannot boot in safe mode due to use of FV2 on the boot drive.

I use the system as an iTunes server. I boot in as a "server" user, and launch iTunes. The media is on an external media drive that uses FV2. The drives are set to share for two computers that login for the media.

Here's my problem after updating:

1-Everything appeared normal

2-Shortly after the screen sleeps, I cannot "wake" the system. I see a black screen with a functional mouse cursor. The system is not remotely accessible via screen sharing or drive sharing

3-I reboot. Shows the "server" user as being logged in, which is curious. I login, and am greeted with a message saying I need to enter the password for the external volume. But the key is saved in the keychain, and the drive appears mounted?!

4-The external drive no longer appears browseable in Finder. I am able to connect manually using "connect to server" in finder, and entering

afp://user@SYSTEMNAME.local/iTunes

5-I leave the system alone for 10 minutes, and the screen goes black

The following settings were not adjusted after the upgrade

Energy saver:

Computer sleep: never

Display sleep: 5 minutes

Put hard disks to sleep when possible

Security:

Require password 1 minute after sleep or screen saver

Screen saver:

5 minutes

Any suggestions on what to try next?

OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Thanks.

Yosemite Cache Cleaner (Northern Softworks) clears system and/or user cache, when cache is suspected as a fault. This application was run (not installed) for the first time only after I encountered these problems.

Here's the EtreCheck report:

Problem description:

Shortly after login, perhaps exactly when the screen is set to power off (5 minutes), the screen appears black with a moving cursor. Cannot get to a login screen or desktop. The system is set >not< to go to sleep. BitTorrent Sync is shown as a high CPU offender, but has not been running when the screen went dark before.

First off, Bittorrent Sync is not torrent software. I have never installed or used torrent software. BT sync is non-cloud client for peer-to-peer sync, from trusted sources. Do you use DropBox? I don't, because I don't like their security model.

In fact, myself and a few colleagues use BT Sync at work to share large projects. The Fortune 50 software company I work for blocks torrents and DropBox, but they don't block Bittorrent Sync, because it's not torrent software.

I appreciate help. My system is a "total mess"? Then please explain. But snarky comments and pot shots don't help. At least you stopped short of accusing me of stealing software, which I neither participate in or condone.

But please. If you don't know what apps are, just say so. I don't expect anyone to spend time researching the apps I use, but criticizing something you clearly know nothing about in a condescending tone is not productive.

Thanks Mike. I reset Sophos' preferences to default and still had the same problem. Uninstalling Sophos seems to have done it for now. That helps me narrow the field to either configure it differently or find another AV client.

And for the record, I never have used torrents. I make the same professional recommendations to my corporate clients.

I use BT Sync and Chronosync for peer-to-peer synchronization of my desktop and download folders as I move between five of my personally-owned systems, as well as sharing documents with my family.

I am having a similar issue on my mid 2011 iMac 27". I updated the thunderbolt firmware and 10.10.4 at the same time. I can boot from my internal HD but when I boot from the thunderbolt SSD, It loads to a gray screen and the mouse works but nothing else. I was able to restore the SSD via time machine backup and everything was ok until the update was automatically applied again by the App store and the next day I had the same problem. I'm guessing then that it is a problem with 10.10.4 and my iMac. I just turned off the auto update for OS X and I'll just have to wait and see if a fix shows up or skip this version.

It's sad to see all the dickish responses here. there's nothing wrong with using Sophos, or cache cleaners. 10.10.4 has definitely been problematic in my shop. Condescending, and yes SNARKY Mac-heads.

Except that Sophos has absolutely NO purpose on OS X and has been known to cause slow downs and kernel panics. Unless the OP comes back and reports differently uninstalling it has solved his problem.

Dickish? Condesending and SNARKY? Pot meet kettle.....

Updated to 10.10.4, seeing black screen, drive won't mount
