iTunes v12.2 in Windows XP SP3?

I get no updates for it, but http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ says Windows XP SP3, but its downloaded installer says no. I am confused!

Thank you in advance. 🙂

There does seem to have been an issue with the last 2-3 updates to iTunes, refusing to install on systems that meet the documented requirements. I'm not aware of a resolution to this, though I'm surprised that Apple continues to state support for XP given that its been unsupported by Microsoft for well over a year.

I wonder if Apple forgot to update its download's requirements.

There's definitely something odd with the info on Apple's download pages:

  • the page for the 32-bit downloaded states "Windows XP, Vista, 7" - no mention of Windows 8/8.1 (which admittedly is rarely found in a 32-bit edition on newer laptops/desktops, but does exist where users have upgraded from an older OS, and is used on many Windows tablets). Also no mention of the restriction to XP SP3, which was stated for multiple previous releases.
  • the page for the 64-bit installer just says "for Windows" with no mention at all of editions that are supported or not supported

Hopefully there will be an update shortly that will at least clarify which Windows editions are actually required for iTunes 12.2.

There seem to be several issues with the update process - including the situation that XP and Vista users may be alerted to a new update (12.2) that will not install on their systems. If you're running either of these legacy OSs, and are already using iTunes 12.1.2, you might as well turn off update notifications (Edit > Preferences > Advanced). It seems highly unlikely that there will be any iTunes version later than 12.1.2 that is compatible with XP or Vista.
