Instead of adding a credit card how can use a gift card instead on my Apple ID after the initial set up?

I've already set up my Apple ID and during the initial set up I saw that entering gift card info was an option. It's been a week and now I'd like to make some purchases but I don't want to use my credit card. When I go to my Apple ID in the store I know longer see the gift card option.
