MacBook Pro (early 2011) running incredibly slow

Problem description:

My MacBook Pro has been running extremely slow recently. Ive tried resetting the SMC and repairing the HD disk with the disk utility to no avail. Any further suggestions? It struggles to perform even basic tasks such as web browsing.

When a machine is running really slow its often because the hard drive has failed and has bad sectors, or blocks. It is critical that you backup your content now. I would suggest booting to a known good bootable volume such as the original installation DVD. If the known good system works its more than likely that the hard drive has failed. To boot to a different operating system hold the option key when you turn on the machine. For testing a hard drive I suggest Tech Tool Deluxe or seeing an Authorised Service Provider or Apple store
