Macbook Pro 5,3 Crashing Often on Yosemite 10.10.3

Hi, I'm working with a MacBookPro5,3 (1 Intel Core 2 Duo,2.8 GHz, 8g memory *not from Apple*), and i've been experiencing multiple crashes since having my computer serviced by Apple back at the end of the year (December/January). I've contacted them but since I did so after their warranty period, I feel that I'm on my own.

When the computer would freeze up and shut down, I would hear a ticking noise (turns out that I guess it's the cd drive (the one I had before wasn't working and it was replaced with a new one), since I replaced the SATA with an SSD thinking it the drive was faulty or wasn't seated correctly) and the computer would have trouble booting back up-with multiple restarts.

Since then, I have visited multiple forums here and put back the old memory, reset PRAM, reset SMC, repaired the disk multiple times (seems to be the recurring issue), and have performed diskutil from boot -verbose and in the terminal, I don't recall the issue happening in safe boot, but I move around between work and school often and don't remember how that ended...Sometimes, when the system tries to boot too many times, it just gives up and either shows the 'prohibited' sign or just a black screen. I have done a clean install and it still happens periodically. The kernel panic report points to different processes, namely: WindowServer (on event wakeups), IOGraphics, or AppleHWSensor. I looked into the drivers through Apple and they don't need to be updated. At this point, I think it's a hardware connection or hardware malfunction issue, and when I try to run the Apple Hardware Test (by holding D or cmd+D relentlessly), the system just decides to boot as normal.

I did just notice that the Bluetooth is 'old,' and I did just update to 10.10.4 (literally moments ago), but i'll make sure that the sharing thingy enabled by Bluetooth 4.0 isn't enabled.
